What are you looking for?

Not only we are what we eat, we’re also what we put on our skin. From shampoo to lotion, the Beauty industry relies on plastic to survive and a great amount of our skincare favorites are filled with chemicals and toxic ingredients that not only damage our skin but also the environment. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to change it. Ready for a beauty makeover?

1 Reduce plastic

It’s hard to imagine a world without plastic when 90% of your beauty allies come inside plastic recipients. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. We get that you can’t stop using your favorite serum (at least for now), but there are a few other simple things you can change to make sure you have a less negative impact on the environment. Start by swapping your plastic toothbrush into a bamboo alternative and then switch from disposable to safety razors and from regular shower gel to organic soap bars. It’s as simple as it sounds. However, do it at your own pace. It would be pointless to get rid of everything you have from day to night, so please make sure you use what you have before buying anything new and sustainable. Your makeover won’t make any sense if it involves additional waste!

2 Learn more about ingredients

Never judge a product by its packaging. As said in this useful dictionary of skincare ingredients from Byrdie, “when it comes to skincare, you can’t always trust chic packaging or rosy marketing language that promises ‘plump, firm, clear, youthful, flawless skin’”. Besides running away from animal testing, you should always make sure your favorites aren’t filled with parabens, silicones, artificial colors, plastic microbeads and all things toxic. It’s not always easy to find them as they are masters in disguise, but glossaries like this one are everywhere. You’ll become a pro in no time!

3 Reuse

It sounds obvious, but most of us forget our empties doesn’t always need to end up in the trash can. Most of the products we buy come in plastic or glass jars that can be washed and reused to save new formulas or serve as container for makeup remover pads and cotton buds. And speaking of it, it’s about time to switch the typical single-use option you find in supermarkets into a more sustainable alternative. According to Self, it takes years for makeup wipes to breakdown in the landfill and the case gets even worse if you’re flushing them through the toilet. Fortunately, from cloths to organic cotton rounds and silicon devices, beauty brands are launching new eco-friendly reusable alternatives by the minute. Just google it. You’ll save money and the planet!

4 Refill

If you think shampoo only comes inside a single-use plastic bottle, think again. Many zero-waste shops, like Maria Granel or Organii, have refill stations where you can take your own containers, and beauty brands are starting to focus on their own refillable products, from deodorant to makeup. “If you buy a refill instead of a completely new product, you save 70% on CO2, 65% on energy and 45% on water”, says Refinery29.

Who knew taking care of the planet could sound so easy?
