If you’d never heard the word lyocell before then you haven’t been paying enough attention. Alongside cotton and reused fabrics, lyocell is one of Springkode’s favourite sustainable-fabric alternatives and it’s probably saving the planet – and doing wonders for your wardrobe, too. Don’t worry, we’ll explain.

Remember when we made you ask yourselves #whomademyclothes? Well, now it’s time to ask what your clothes are made of, and that means learning some lessons about fabrics.

We’re happy to say that, in the past few years, the fashion industry has been taking some steps towards using more sustainable practices and has added some new fabrics to its natural fabric repertoire. Today, we’re going to discuss the so called it-girl of sustainable fabrics: lyocell.

What is it and where does it come from?

Simple answer - trees. Made from cellulose found in wood pulp collected from sustainably farmed trees, lyocell is an eco-friendly and natural fibre. It’s produced in a solvent spinning organic, sustainable and revolutionary award-winning process that recovers, purifies and reuses solvents and emissions.

Developed for the first time in the 70s, you may also see it referred to as TENCEL, but that’s actually the name of a specialized brand and a type of lyocell fibre. In fact, in order to be able to use the brand name, a fabric should have at least 30% TENCEL or it’s a no go.

Used in many types of textiles and typically blended with other fibres, lyocell is now one of the most versatile fabrics of all time. It can be used to produce an endless set of textiles completely guilt-free, from jeans to dresses and even towels and sheets.

Although this fabric is more expensive than most eco-friendly alternatives, it boasts a long list of positive aspects. It’s biodegradable, antibacterial, super durable, smooth and soft, breathable, lightweight, comfortable and great for sensitive skin.

In addition, it’s highly absorbent which means all fabrics can be easily and ethically dyed in endless colours, and its fibrillation can be manipulated into everything from suede to silky finishes. We’ve mentioned before about being versatile, remember?

Yet most importantly of all, we’re talking about taking care of our planet. Since we do it by eating organic, why not take this approach to our clothing as well?
